Paralegal Certificate
The paralegal job is starting to grow. More and more lawyers are seeing the
benefits of using a legal assistant as part of their legal team. Paralegals can help save
lawyers time and clients money. Paralegals are becoming a recognized necessity for many
lawyers. Getting a paralegal certificate can jump start a persons career in the legal field. A
paralegal works behind the scenes to aid the lawyer. They mainly focus on research and working
with clients to prepare for a trial or court hearing. They are not allowed to give legal
advice or act as counsel to a client. They are simply there to help out the attorney. They may
interview witnesses and help prepare clients during a case. Paralegals may also attend court
hearings but may not represent or speak for a client in court. Most often their role is to
conduct research and draft legal documents. To become a paralegal usually requires obtaining
a paralegal degree. There is also a Certified Legal Assistant exam a
person can take
once completing paralegal studies. A paralegal training can take anywhere from a few
months to a couple years to complete, depending on the type of degree desired. Once they have
completed their paralegal program and earned their certificate they can then find employment.
Paralegals work in many more places than just with private law firms.
They can either work for
insurance companies, corporations or even the government. The choices are abundant. A
paralegal degree can even help a person further their current career. A person interested to
become a paralegal can check with their employer to see if the company hires
such personnel. They
may be surprised to learn they could stay with their current employer while being able to work
in their new chosen career. Getting a paralegal certificate is not difficult either. There
are many options in paralegal schools. Many colleges now offer paralegal programs. There are
online paralegal degree programs, too. The American Bar Association recognizes the importance
of paralegals to the legal field and has begun to approve certain colleges and universities
paralegal training. An ABA approved program may help a person get a job with more prestigious
law firms and companies. The paralegal jobs are expected to continue growing. With many
lawyers being overwhelmed with cases, these assistants help to take some of the work load.
Lawyers find they can concentrate more on preparing for court and attending to details if they
employ a legal assistant. In addition, clients often appreciate the money they save when they
use a lawyer that has paralegals because the work a he does is billed at a much lower rate.
Getting a paralegal certificate is a great way to get into a fast growing career.
